Building a Cleaner Kenya,
Our Projects
At Zero Waste Kenya, our mission is to create a sustainable, waste-free future through innovative projects that target waste reduction, recycling, and responsible disposal. We believe that every action counts, and with the support of communities, businesses, and individuals, we can make lasting environmental change. Discover our current initiatives below:
Samawati ToSHA
This flagship project focuses on deploying Samawati ToSHA plasma thermal decomposition technology across Kenya. ToSHA machines are a revolutionary solution to the country’s waste crisis, providing a sustainable alternative to landfills and incineration.
Each machine processes up to 2.5 tonnes of waste per day, converting residual waste—including biomedical waste and unrecyclable plastics—into non-toxic ash that can be repurposed in the construction industry.
With a goal to deploy ToSHA machines in at least 1,000 locations across the country, we aim to significantly lower Kenya’s waste-related greenhouse gas emissions while generating green jobs and enhancing community aesthetics by reclaiming spaces previously used as landfills.
After Waste segregation, Residual waste is usually sent to a landfill or dumped illegally into our rivers, along the roads and even in our estates while the rest ends up in an incinerator.
Why landfill or incinerate residual waste when we have a better technology that can easily be deployed? Zero Waste Kenya is introducing an innovative solution—Samawati ToSHA, a plasma thermal technology that safely decomposes all waste, even medical and non-recyclable plastics. This process turns waste into non-toxic ash, which can be reused in construction, helping us achieve a truly sustainable waste management system.
How ToSHA Technology works
ToSHA Technology works by using advanced plasma thermal decomposition to safely process all types of waste, including hazardous biomedical materials and non-recyclable plastics. This high-temperature process breaks down waste into its basic components, producing inert, non-toxic ash that can be repurposed in industries like construction. Unlike traditional incinerators, ToSHA virtually eliminates harmful emissions such as carbon and dioxins, reducing greenhouse gases by up to 98%. This cutting-edge technology offers a sustainable solution for waste disposal, turning harmful materials into useful byproducts while protecting the environment.
Key Benefits of ToSHA
ToSHA revolutionizes waste management by providing an eco-friendly solution that drastically reduces greenhouse gas emissions and eliminates the need for landfills and incinerators. It turns waste into reusable materials, promoting a sustainable, circular economy.
1. Eliminates secondary emissions
Unlike traditional waste disposal methods, ToSHA drastically reduces harmful emissions like carbon dioxide, dioxins, and furans by 96-98%, far exceeding environmental standards set by Kenya NEMA and US EPA.
2. Reduces reliance on landfills and incinerators
ToSHA minimizes environmental degradation by providing a cleaner alternative to landfill dumping, helping Kenya move closer to zero waste.
3. Economic opportunities
ToSHA offers waste service providers potential carbon credits, creating a self-sustaining model that can be subsidized by environmental credits and EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) fees.
4. Circular economy impact
The inert, non-toxic ash produced by ToSHA can be used in construction, reducing the demand for virgin materials.
Anti-Litter Campaign
Creating cleaner communities, one cleanup at a time.
Our Anti-Litter Campaign educates the public on the harmful impact of litter and empowers communities to take charge through clean-up drives, public awareness events, and partnerships with local authorities. We promote responsible waste disposal and aim to reclaim Kenya’s beauty from the scourge of litter.
Behavior Change Communications Campaign
Changing mindsets for a sustainable tomorrow.
Behavior change is key to sustainable waste management. This campaign educates individuals, businesses, and communities about reducing waste at the source. Through communication strategies, workshops, and educational programs, we aim to shift attitudes toward waste disposal and promote zero waste practices as a national movement.
